Taxonomy: Two subspecies of Kinosternon subrubrum are recognized: K. s. hippocrepis (Mississipppi Mud Turtle) and K. s. subrubrum (Eastern Mud Turtle) (Iverson et al. 2017).  Populations in Tennessee belong to the subspecies K. s. subrubrum, except in a narrow geographic corridor along the Mississippi River where K. s. subrubrum and K. s. hippocrepis may intergrade (Conant and Collins 1998).

Distribution: Scattered records exist from Hamilton and Rhea counties westward to the Mississippi River.  Current knowledge indicates the species may be absent in the upper Tennessee River drainage.
