Taxonomy: Of three subspecies recognized for
Trachemys scripta (Iverson et al. 2017),
two occur in Tennessee. These include
T. scripta elegans (Red-eared Slider)
and T. s. troostii (Cumberland
Slider).
Distribution: The Pond Slider occurs in all of the state’s major
river drainages, with T. s. troostii
being limited to the drainages of the upper Cumberland and Tennessee rivers in
eastern Tennessee and T. s. elegans
occurring from there westward to the Mississippi River (Conant and Collins 1998, Ernst
1990).
