Taxonomy: Two subspecies of the Eastern Box Turtle are recognized (Iverson et al. 2012).

Distribution: Eastern Box Turtles are found across all of Tennessee especially in forested regions. Terrapene c. carolina, Woodland Box Turtle, occupies all but the extreme southwestern corner of the state where it is replaced by T. c. triunguis, Three-toed Box Turtle (Conant and Collins 1998).
