Taxonomy: Two of three recognized subspecies of Virginia valeriae (Crother et al. 2012) occur in Tennessee (Conant and Collins 1998). These include V. v. valeriae (Eastern Smooth Earthsnake) and V. v. elegans (Western Smooth Earthsnake).

Distribution: Valid records exist from all three grand divisions of the state.   However, large areas that lack verified records include most of West Tennessee, the southern Central Basin and southern Highland Rim of Middle Tennessee, much of the Cumberland Plateau, and all of the counties in northeastern Tennessee.  According to Conant and Collins (1998), V. v valeriae occurs in East Tennessee while V. v. elegans is found elsewhere in the state.
