Taxonomy:
Four subspecies of
N. sipedon are currently recognized (Crother et al. 2012).
Two of these are known from Tennessee.
These include N. s. sipedon
(Northern Watersnake) and N. s. pleuralis
(Midland Watersnake) (Conant and Collins 1998).
Distribution: In Tennessee,
Nerodia
sipedon occurs statewide.
According to Conant and Collins (1998), N.
s. pleuralis occupies the western two-thirds the state, while
N. s. sipedon occurs in northeastern
Tennessee. Their distribution map shows a
north-south zone of intergradation in East Tennessee where the ranges of the two subspecies
overlap.
