Taxonomy:  One subspecies of Diamond-backed Watersnake (N. r. rhombifer, Northern Diamond-Backed Watersnake) is recognized in the United States (Crother, 2012). Two others (N. r. blanchardi and N. r. werleri) occur in Mexico (Brandley et al. 2010). 

Distribution:  The Diamond-backed Watersnake is known from both Mississippi and Tennessee River drainages in West Tennessee.  It has also been found in the Cumberland River drainage in Stewart and Montgomery counties in Middle Tennessee.
