Taxonomy: Lampropeltis nigra, formally a subspecies of Lampropeltis getula, was elevated to full species by Pyron and Burbrink (2009a) and is listed as a monotypic taxon by Crother et al. (2012).

Distribution:  The Eastern Black Kingsnake has been documented throughout all of Tennessee, except for the extreme northeastern counties.
