Taxonomy:  Of the 12 subspecies of Ring-necked Snakes listed by Crother et al. (2012), two occur in Tennessee: D. p. edwardsii, Northern Ring-necked Snake and D. p. stictogenys, Mississippi Ring-necked Snake (Conant and Collins 1998).

Distribution: The Ring-necked Snake occurs statewide but there are conspicuous gaps in the documented distribution in the southern half of Middle Tennessee and across an east-west strip of counties in West Tennessee from Henderson County to the Mississippi River.  Conant and Collins (1998) show D. p. edwardsi and D. p. stictogenys occupying roughly the eastern and western halves of the state, respectively, with a zone of intergradation where their ranges overlap.  Evidence indicating an intergrade population involving D. p. edwardsi and D. p. punctatus in southeastern Tennessee was presented by Johnson (1958) and Johnson and Webb (1964).
